Text Annotations for the Art of War

When we published The Art of War: The Denma Translation in 2001, we decided to make all the academic details of our work—the text and our translation—available through our website. This work was completed under the direction of our colleague Professor Kidder Smith and his students at Bowdoin College. We include a link to it below and thank Kidder and Bowdoin College for permission to do so.

Here is the opportunity to examine the reasoning behind every choice we made in this translation. These include decisions about the meaning range of Chinese words, a discussion of possible English equivalents, and the weighing of textual variants. This also includes the Chinese text of the Sun Tzu, with literal English equivalents supplied word by word. Altogether this constitutes the full scholarly apparatus for the translation.
